Fresno State celebrates Centennial Commencement

Friday morning, a group of 2011 Fresno State graduates will walked across the stage at the Save Mart Center. The 9:30 a.m. graduation for the Craig School Of Business kicked off a weekend of ceremonies and celebrations. more
Founding President honored at Centennial Commencement
California State University, Fresno founding President C.L. McLane will be honored with a presentation to great-granddaughter Beverly Brock during the university’s100th Commencement beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Save Mart Center.
The conferral of degrees on the Centennial Class of 2011 culminates a yearlong celebration of Fresno State’s first10 decades of higher education in Central California. more
Fresno State Centennial history on sale at Kennel Bookstore
“A Century of Excellence 1911-2011,” the first comprehensive history of Fresno State’s initial 100 years, is available for purchase at the Kennel Bookstore for $49.95.
The book was published in time for Commencement or Father’s Day giving and well ahead of the winter holiday gift season. Sales also are anticipated to individuals who want to add a volume about California State University, Fresno to their local history library.
The book is a coffee table-sized, 295-page, lavishly illustrated volume written by local historian William Secrest Jr. and Lanny Larson of University Communications at Fresno State. It covers the history of the institution, its leaders through the years, sports and academic achievements, buildings past and present and a look at student, staff and faculty life over the decades from Normal School to 21st century university. more
Students bury Centennial Time Capsule
A time capsule was sealed and buried on Wednesday, May 18, near the Memorial Fountain at California State University, Fresno, scheduled to be unearthed in 2061 for a glimpse at the university’s Centennial Celebration year.
Associated Students Inc. President-elect Selena Farnesi, Yesenia Carrillo of the University Student Union and Fresno State President John D. Welty led a ceremony that preceded capsule’s burial under dirt shoveled by the three. The event is one of the final happenings celebrating Fresno State’s Centennial. more
Fresno State Centennial wine releases May 3
As part of California State University, Fresno’s 100th anniversary celebration, the award-winning Fresno State Winery is releasing its commemorative Centennial Cuvee during a special release event 11-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 3.
Dr. John D. Welty, university president, will be joined by a delegation of officials and students for the release at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market (5370 N. Chestnut Ave.). Winemaster Kenneth Fugelsang and winemaker John Giannini will be there, too. more
Centennial celebrates the difference Fresno State makes
As Fresno State prepares to celebrate the graduation of its 100th class, the university has time to reflect on its contribution to the Valley.
"This year has provided an opportunity to reflect on the university’s past as we celebrate the Centennial," says President John D. Welty. "Indeed, it’s been a wonderful year in which we have learned more about how schools, colleges, and other major areas of the university were formed, and the impact that they have had in this region." more
A Century of Excellence publishes
May is full of excitement as Fresno State winds up its Centennial celebration which began last April. There will be a gala on May 14 and Fresno State's 100th Commencement on May 21. But one of the most exciting things that commemorates this year is the Centennial book, which is titled A Century of Excellence.
"This book is crammed with information about Fresno State from our very beginning in 1911 all the way through to earlier this year," says Lanny Larson, editor, University Communications, and co-author of the book. "I can tell you, because I have had the privilege of working on it, that it has some things that I certainly did not know about, and I've been around here a long time … and some things I bet you didn't know about, either." more
Parade marks Fresno State centennial
The events surrounding Fresno State’s 100th anniversary made for a busy Saturday on campus, with the Tailgate of the Century event in the Peace Garden and the Bulldogs football game Saturday night.
More than 60 entries, including the Madden Library Book Cart Drill Team, marching band, cheer squads and floats representing various groups from the university marched in the Centennial Homecoming Parade.
The grand marshal of the parade was Earl Smittcamp, class of 1939. more

Fresno Bee writers recall Fresno State's first 100 years
Two award-winning writers with The Fresno Bee – both California State University, Fresno alumni – join Friends of the Madden Library on Friday, Sept. 10, to look back on coverage of university’s first 100 years.
The first Evening in the Round begins at 6 p.m. at the Table Mountain Rancheria Reading Room on the third floor of the Henry Madden Library’s Table Mountain Rancheria Tower. The event is the Friends group’s annual meeting.
Bee editorial page editor and vice president Jim Boren will be joined by columnist Bill McEwen sharing anecdotes and recounting the coverage of significant events since Fresno State opened its doors in 1911 as a teachers school. more
Exhibition of Fresno State's history through photos debuts Sept. 1
The 100-year history of California State University, Fresno will come to life through an extensive display of photographs at a Centennial exhibition in the Henry Madden Library opening Wednesday, Sept. 1.
The exhibition runs through Sept. 27 at the Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery on the second floor of the library’s Table Mountain Rancheria Tower.
A detailed timeline highlights Fresno State’s evolution through the decades from a state normal school training teachers for the region to a 21st-century university offering training in scores of fields through eight academic colleges and schools. more
Centennial Fall Semester Begins on KSEE Sunrise

Fresno State Centennial Sweet Corn arrives at Gibson Market
From plot-to-plate in less than two hours, Fresno State’s always popular hand-picked sweet corn has arrived at the Gibson Farm Market – fresh and at the peak of its quality, sweetness and tenderness.
The student product is dubbed ‘Fresno State Centennial Sweet Corn’ in honor of the university’s 100th anniversary celebration that is under way. White and yellow sweet corn of the “Vision” variety that was a big hit with Gibson customers in its debut last year will be available throughout the summer. The first bins of yellow corn rolled in Saturday in limited quantity. Now there’s lots more. The price remains at 4 ears for $1. more

The spring 2010 issue of FresnoState Magazine spotlights California State University, Fresno’s Centennial celebration with centerpiece articles about summer school in the Sierra and a university family in its fourth generation of teachers.
The magazine also focuses on the Campaign for Fresno State, including the impact of donor funds on research and programs, and on alumni news, profiling an alumna who blogs about food and recognition of Japanese-American alumni affected by World War II internment orders. more
The big - and human - 100
California State University, Fresno launched its Centennial celebration on Friday, April 16, with a proclamation and then with hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and future alumni forgoing lunch to gather in the campus amphitheater for a birthday photo op.
The festivities – part of the kickoff of the annual Vintage Days at Fresno State – are an invitation to the community and alumni to return to campus during the 13 months until the 100th Commencement in May 2011 to celebrate at one of numerous events planned for the Centennial. more
Vintage Days, Centennial launch, just part of ultrabusy weekend
It’s one of the busiest weekends on the California State University, Fresno calendar, as the annual Vintage Days kicks off, the university’s Centennial celebration launches with a “Human 100” and crowds flock also to open houses on campus.
The action begins Thursday, April 15, and won’t be over until late April 18 after tens of thousands of people have come to campus.
Vintage Days, which attracts more than 50,000 individuals to Fresno State over its three-day run, is the centerpiece of activity. And as if the usual student-organized carnival-like event – featuring music, games, crafts booths, food and more – wasn’t an energetic-enough undertaking, the 2010 edition is augmented by the Centennial launch. more
Vintage Days - Hang ‘10 kicks off Fresno State Centennial Celebration
The 2010 edition of the annual Vintage Days celebration at California State University, Fresno also will feature President John D. Welty kicking off the university’s 13-month Centennial Celebration.
The four-day, student-planned celebration attracts over 50,000 people from Fresno and the surrounding communities to the Fresno State campus for numerous social, cultural and recreational activities. This year’s Vintage Days theme is “Hang ’10.”
The Fresno State Marching Band will be on hand at noon Friday, April 16, to help Welty open the year-long celebration of the university’s opening in 1911 as a normal school to train teachers. The Centennial Celebration, which includes such events as a parade and Tailgate of the Century at homecoming Oct. 16, concludes with Commencement in May 2011. more
